From waves to asphalt - Madrid's surfing roots

The history of Madrid Skateboards is closely linked to surfing. Founder Jerry Madrid loved surfing from a young age and built his own boards in his parents' garage. Soon his friends were also interested in it and got surfboards from him, which Madrid made especially for them.

The transition to skateboards was born out of necessity, so to speak, because when the Californian waves weren't high enough, Jerry Madrid took to the streets instead and surfed the asphalt. The first Madrid skateboards were made of fiberglass and other materials more commonly found in surfboards. In the time that followed, Madrid experimented with various constructions and shapes that influence the look of skateboards and longboards to this day.

The first real concave from Madrid

Today, concave is an absolute given for every skateboarder and longboarder, but that wasn't always the case. After Madrid Skateboards was officially founded in 1976, Jerry Madrid designed a pro model for the then downhill rider Roger Hickey in 1979. The highlight of it all: this was the first deck with concave! A development that is still important today in longboarding and skateboarding.
